cyprus fm — cyprus fm — Cyprus is functioning normally despite the ongoing Middle East conflict, as affirmed by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos in a recent interview with ERTnews. He highlighted that schools and universities remain open, while both private and public sectors continue to operate effectively.
Kombos noted that the number of flights arriving and departing from Cyprus has nearly returned to pre-crisis levels, indicating a level of stability amidst the tensions surrounding Iran. However, he cautioned that the broader regional situation is escalating and is unlikely to resolve anytime soon.
“We have a duty and obligation to act preventively and protectively,” Kombos emphasised, addressing the importance of vigilance in the face of potential threats. He referred to a drone attack on a British base as a significant incident, alongside an attempted attack that was intercepted far from Cyprus.
Further expressing the critical nature of regional cooperation, Kombos acknowledged the support from Greece, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis playing a pivotal role. He remarked on the importance of this partnership, not just for practical assistance, but also for the symbolic representation of the fraternal relationship between the two nations.
In addition to Greece, Kombos expressed gratitude for the assistance from France, Italy, and Spain, reinforcing the collaborative efforts in ensuring the security of Cyprus. “We are operating protectively within an excellent cooperation framework with the countries that rushed to assist us,” he stated.
Despite the regional tensions, Kombos reassured that Cyprus is not in a state of war. “We have a duty to act with protection and the security of the Republic of Cyprus in mind, without giving the impression that we are living in a state of war,” he said, reflecting a balance between awareness and normalcy.
