This caution is particularly pertinent for items such as toys and cosmetics, which have shown higher safety risks according to recent research.
The association advises consumers to scrutinise extremely large discounts, as these may not always reflect the true value of a product. Shoppers are encouraged to delve into product features and ensure they meet their needs, while also seeking out online reviews to inform their decisions.
Price-cut announcements can often be misleading, with some retailers displaying exact figures while others opt for vague terms such as “special price” or “offer”. These phrases may obscure the actual size of the reduction, leading to potential consumer confusion.
Moreover, the guidance highlights that information shared through online newsletters is frequently utilised by suppliers to create customer profiles for targeted advertising, which consumers should be aware of when subscribing.
Ensuring the credibility and customer service record of each seller is vital, along with being conscious of return policies before making a purchase. The association reminds shoppers to always ask for a receipt and to verify it prior to leaving the checkout.
For purchases made online or off-premises, the union notes that consumers possess a right to withdraw within 14 days of receiving a product, provided they notify the seller in writing. It is important to note that this right may not apply if the seller is based outside the EU.
