hospital staff — hospital staff — A citizen has lodged serious complaints regarding poor building conditions at a state hospital and claims that staff verbally attacked and threatened him after he voiced his concerns on social media.

Following his post, which called for improvements to facilities and staff attitudes, the man visited the hospital the next day to see a relative and encountered hostility from medical staff. He described the experience to Phileleftheros, revealing that he faced verbal assaults, intimidation, and warnings from the very individuals responsible for his relative’s care.

In his initial social media post, he articulated his disappointment with the state of public hospitals, lamenting that little has changed in Cyprus’s health system over the years. He expressed concern for the humanity of healthcare providers, stating, “Nurses, carers and doctors, your job isn’t just to measure blood pressure or give medication; the patient isn’t just a room number, but a soul in pain, who is afraid, who needs human conversation.”

He highlighted issues such as a lack of respect and sensitivity from staff, as well as degraded hygiene conditions within hospital areas. The man urged for intervention, suggesting that journalists and legal professionals should investigate the conditions, maintaining that visibility and discussion are crucial for change.

However, he claims that his critique triggered severe reactions from hospital personnel. The day after his post, he alleges that doctors entered his relative’s room with aggressive demeanour, shouting and exerting intimidation. They reportedly told him he had no right to speak publicly about hospital conditions and warned him of potential consequences.

This confrontation unfolded in front of other patients and staff, contributing to what he described as a “climate of terror and shame”. Furthermore, he claims that he was denied vital information regarding his relative’s health, with doctors stating they had no obligation to provide updates and were merely doing him a favour.

His repeated requests for assistance in managing the patient’s severe pain went unanswered, with staff advising him to wait for a doctor. After a significant delay, an examination revealed that the patient’s stomach had accumulated two litres of fluid, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The citizen’s reflections extend beyond his personal experiences; he is concerned about how others who speak out may be treated. He expressed anxiety for their dignity, stating, “The hospital isn’t a place to accommodate even your enemies,” while describing conditions in the facility as “pre-war”.

Through his complaint, he aims to catalyse public discourse about the necessity for respect, transparency, and humane treatment within healthcare settings. He insists that the issue transcends his own experience, representing every citizen’s right to express concerns freely, particularly when it pertains to matters of public interest like health.
