  • A 60-year-old man, Kyriakos Kyriakou, was killed in a tragic road collision on the Limassol–Troodos road on Sunday afternoon, with a motorcyclist in critical condition.

The incident unfolded at 1:35 PM near the junction leading to the Vati landfill, where Kyriakou attempted to make a right-hand turn onto the main road. His manoeuvre blocked the path of a 40-year-old motorcyclist travelling north toward Troodos, resulting in a violent crash.

Emergency responders rushed Kyriakou to Limassol General Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The impact was severe enough that rescuers had to cut him free from the wreckage of his vehicle.

The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet and lacked a valid licence, was taken to a private hospital in serious condition. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether Kyriakou was wearing a seatbelt.

Limassol Traffic Police Chief Marios Charalambous confirmed that while a right-hand turn is permitted at the junction, the incident is under scrutiny to ascertain the precise details that led to this tragic event. This collision marks the second road fatality in Cyprus in just 24 hours, following the death of 17-year-old Ioannis Nikolaou in Nicosia on Saturday evening.

In light of these recent events, authorities may consider reviewing traffic arrangements on this stretch of road, which features three lanes—two for uphill traffic and one for downhill—aiming to prevent further accidents in the area.
