A coalition of animal welfare volunteers has urged the public to remain calm and avoid unsubstantiated accusations regarding reported cat disappearances in Cyprus. This call to action was issued by PAWS – Protecting Animals Without Shelter, amid growing public concern following complaints about the alleged removal of sterilised cats from a supermarket parking lot in Latsia.
As the debate unfolds, PAWS expressed its grave concern, stating, “As volunteers of animal rescue organisations and independent volunteers, we express our grave concern regarding the recent incidents of cat disappearances recorded in various regions of Cyprus.” The group emphasised the need to handle this issue with seriousness, composure, and institutional responsibility, reiterating their commitment to the protection of animals and the safeguarding of legality.
In a bid to prevent misinformation, PAWS cautioned against targeting registered animal welfare organisations without evidence. They asserted, “We emphasise that registered animal welfare organisations which operate legally and are subject to necessary oversight must not be targeted without evidence.” They also clarified that lawful adoptions and the relocation of animals abroad, when conducted under prescribed procedures, constitute acts of rescue aimed at providing better lives for these animals.
As online discussions have intensified, some social media users have speculated about the existence of organised networks behind the alleged removals. However, the police have yet to confirm any such network and have stated that investigations are ongoing.
In light of the escalating situation, PAWS has called for responsible reporting of incidents. The coalition urged citizens to refrain from public accusations or confrontations, stating, “We call upon all citizens to remain calm and avoid conflicts, threats, or public accusations without proof, as these do not contribute to a substantial investigation of the matter.” They highlighted the importance of allowing volunteers to continue their work without interference, especially as many are engaged in spay and neuter programmes across the island.
PAWS has also provided a channel for individuals to report incidents or missing cats. They encouraged those who witness suspicious trapping or collection of cats to document the incident calmly and send the details, including name, location, date, time, and contact information, to [email protected]. This initiative aims to compile information responsibly and forward it to competent authorities for further investigation.
In their statement, PAWS reiterated their focus on cooperation rather than confrontation, noting, “Our purpose is not confrontation, but cooperation and organised documentation, so that we may contribute substantially to the investigation of these incidents.” They concluded with a call for unity and determination, urging the community to act responsibly for the sake of the animals and society at large.
