Ambulance services responded to 422 emergency calls during the Christmas period, highlighting the demands placed on healthcare during festive times. According to Riana Constantinou, head of the ambulance service, the surge in calls was recorded from December 24 to 26, with the Nicosia district seeing the highest number at 172 calls.
Emergency calls: Types of Emergencies Reported
The emergency calls encompassed a range of medical issues, including cases of chest pain, injuries, and various illnesses. Each incident was attended to promptly, showcasing the efficiency and preparedness of the ambulance teams. Constantinou noted that emergency calls generally increase during holidays, and this year, Nicosia experienced a notable rise compared to previous years, although the figures remained within typical festive ranges.
Road Safety and Hospital Preparedness
Encouragingly, no fatal road accidents were reported throughout the three-day period. This marks a positive outcome for road safety during a time when travel often increases. Charalambos Charalambous, spokesman for the public healthcare organisation Okypy, confirmed that hospitals and emergency departments were on high alert, ensuring sufficient beds were available to manage urgent cases.
Flu Cases and Seasonal Health Trends
During the holiday season, hospitals tend to witness higher activity levels, particularly as many personal and specialist doctors take leave. Charalambous mentioned that the types of cases treated were typical for this time of year, including strokes, heart attacks, and an uptick in flu infections. However, he reassured that flu levels were not alarming compared to other regions in Europe.
Efficient Management of Non-Urgent Cases
To effectively manage demand, Okypy has implemented a fast-track clinic system aimed at treating non-urgent cases separately. This strategy helps alleviate pressure on emergency departments and ensures that urgent cases receive the attention they require without delay. Charalambous confirmed that public hospitals are well-prepared, with strengthened emergency services to handle any situation efficiently.
