Akel has strongly condemned what it terms an “imperialist intervention” by the United States in Venezuela following recent US military actions that resulted in the airstrikes across the country and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
In a statement released on Saturday, the party asserted that these actions represent a grave violation of international law. Akel described the US intervention as a blatant intrusion into the internal affairs of a sovereign nation, stating, “The imperialist intervention of the United States against Venezuela, as well as the kidnapping of the country’s elected President Nicolas Maduro and members of his family, on the orders of the far-right government of Donald Trump, constitute a flagrant violation of international law.”
Akel further elaborated that this military aggression is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader US national security strategy aimed at reasserting control over Latin America and the Caribbean. They cited the Monroe Doctrine as a historical precedent for this kind of intervention, arguing that it has evolved into a justification for US hegemony in the region.
The party pointed out that Venezuela, holding the world’s largest oil reserves, is a strategic target in this geopolitical struggle. Akel claimed, “Geopolitical and geoeconomic antagonism is being created so as to be resolved by means of violence, destabilisation, and a violation of state sovereignty.”
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Akel stated that the military attack and the kidnapping of a sitting president without UN authorisation is a direct violation of the UN charter. They urged the international community to condemn these actions and to uphold international law and the right of nations to self-determination.
Akel expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, who they believe are facing unwarranted aggression. “The international community must unequivocally condemn this new intervention and actively defend international law, peace, and the right of peoples to decide for themselves their future, without threats and interventions,” they declared.
In a contrasting perspective, the political party Volt expressed that military force should not replace diplomacy. They emphasised the importance of addressing concerns through dialogue and multilateral cooperation in international forums, such as the United Nations. Volt raised “deep concern” over the allegations regarding the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife, suggesting that, if true, these actions would represent serious violations of national sovereignty and international law.
In a demonstration of solidarity with Venezuela, the Turkish Cypriot party Bagimsizlik Yolu staged a protest outside the US embassy in northern Nicosia. The party’s foreign affairs secretary Salih Hayaloglu proclaimed their support for the Venezuelan people against what he described as “imperialist barbarism.”
Hayaloglu remarked on the historical context of US intervention in Venezuela, recalling attempts to undermine the will of the Venezuelan people since Hugo Chavez’s presidency. He argued that US actions aim to destabilise Latin American nations and seize their natural resources, specifically oil and gas. His rallying cry resonated with protestors: “Down with US imperialism! Socialism or barbarism! Down with American imperialism!”
