9 11 — 9 11 — Cyprus honoured the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States during a poignant tribute on Thursday. The country’s foreign ministry marked the occasion with a heartfelt message posted on X, emphasising the tragic impact of the attacks.
“Today marks 24 years since the heinous terrorist attacks of 9/11,” the ministry stated. “We remember the thousands of innocent victims, the first responders, and all those whose lives have been affected in the most horrific way.”
This statement not only acknowledges the loss of nearly 3,000 lives on that fateful day but also reflects on the enduring legacy of grief and resilience that has followed. The foreign ministry’s tribute serves as a reminder of the day’s significance, both in the United States and globally.
In the wake of the attacks, which were orchestrated by al-Qaeda, the world witnessed a profound shift in international relations and security measures. Nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, leading to catastrophic events including the devastating strikes on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, tragically crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control.
The tribute from Cyprus reiterates the country’s commitment to standing alongside the United States in the ongoing fight against terrorism. “Honouring their memory, we reaffirm our determination to stand together with the United States in the continuous fight against terrorism in all its forms,” the ministry added.
As the anniversary serves as a solemn reminder, it also calls for reflection on the importance of unity in the face of adversity. The Cyprus foreign ministry’s message resonates with many around the world who continue to remember and honour those lost in the attacks.
