This funding, initiated by the interior minister, is aimed at addressing urgent needs for clearing abandoned agricultural land and surrounding areas. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held this week, reflecting the government’s proactive approach following the devastating wildfires in Limassol’s semi-mountainous regions in July.
According to an official announcement, the allocation of €2.07 million is designated for cleaning and necessary works within a 200-metre radius around residential areas. This initiative seeks to prevent and limit the spread of fires, a growing concern due to Cyprus’s extreme weather conditions.
The works will involve a variety of actions, including clearing or cultivating abandoned plots, cutting undergrowth, and trimming trees, tailored to the specific needs of each community.
The process commenced with directives from the interior ministry to district officers, who collaborated with community councils to compile lists detailing necessary interventions and estimated costs. The interior ministry has attached the relevant catalogues and allocation tables by district to the proposal.
Notably, communities included under the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities, particularly those adjacent to forested areas, will not receive this funding. These areas had previously been allocated €1 million for similar fire protection measures as per a decision made by the Cabinet in April 2025.
Furthermore, the proposal grants the interior minister the authority to release the funds and publish the decision following established procedures. This initiative is part of a broader framework designed to address the increasing risk of wildfires in Cyprus.
