cyprus-us relations — cyprus-us relations — Contacts with US congressional leaders are particularly important in efforts to strengthen relations with the United States, according to Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. In a video statement marking the end of his Washington visit on Wednesday, Kombos emphasised the significance of these meetings for Cyprus.
During his trip, Kombos engaged with key congressional figures, including the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the leadership of both the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees. He remarked that this was his second opportunity to meet with congressional leadership, reinforcing the importance of these discussions in fostering closer ties with the US.
“This is particularly important in the effort to strengthen relations with the US,” Kombos stated, highlighting the strategic nature of these engagements. He also participated in events hosted by various think tanks, notably addressing cooperation with Gulf countries at a forum organised by the Arab Gulf States Institute.
Kombos underscored the challenging geostrategic and geopolitical landscape, asserting that Cyprus aims to be a reliable partner to both the US and the European Union. “We are in a very challenging geostrategic and geopolitical situation, and Cyprus, as the presiding country of the Council of the EU, will continue its own efforts to contribute to resolving various issues that affect us both directly and profoundly,” he said.
This visit followed his meeting with Greece’s defence minister in Washington DC, which took place on the sidelines of a conference organised by a Greek non-profit. The two ministers were invited to speak at a workshop hosted by the Delphi Economic Forum, where Kombos shared insights on the priorities of the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the European Union, as well as on transatlantic relations and international developments.
