- A nationwide operation targeting illegal residents in Cyprus has been underway since Sunday morning, resulting in dozens of arrests, according to Justice Minister Costas Fitiris.
Fitiris reported that over 30 undocumented foreigners were apprehended during the operation, with immediate deportation processes already initiated for some. Police spokesman Vyron Vronos elaborated, stating that 31 arrests were made from 5 am to 12 pm, focusing on identifying and deporting illegal residents and those involved in organised crime.
Among those arrested, seven individuals have already been deported, with the remaining cases currently undergoing deportation procedures. Fitiris acknowledged the public’s concerns about safety and addressed the rising criminal activities linked to both local and foreign entities.
“The government faces a challenging situation but has only one option: a firm commitment to tackling organised crime, regardless of origin, form, or structure,” Fitiris noted. He highlighted the increasing intensity of organised crime as a global issue affecting all EU countries, emphasising that both local and foreign criminal organisations in Cyprus would be addressed with all legal means available.
In his remarks, Fitiris outlined the swift actions being taken against those residing illegally or engaging in criminal behaviour without legitimate asylum claims. He assured that rapid deportation procedures are being implemented in accordance with the law.
Fitiris also called on the public to assist law enforcement efforts. “Providing information to the police, even anonymously, is a critical tool for prevention and timely intervention, strengthening the collective effort of the state and society against crime,” he stated.
Looking ahead, he mentioned that the House of Representatives is expected to support the passage of important legislative bills. These measures aim to equip the police with enhanced legal, institutional, and operational tools necessary to combat organised crime effectively.
“The sole objective is the safety across Cyprus,” he concluded, reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining order and addressing concerns surrounding illegal residency and criminal activity.
