de-escalation — Cyprus has voiced its support for de-escalation in Venezuela as tensions rise following recent military actions. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos made the statement on Saturday, emphasising the need for restraint and adherence to international law.

The comments come in the wake of airstrikes conducted by United States forces, which reportedly resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Kombos stated, “We are closely monitoring the developments in Venezuela, in coordination with the EU and other partners.”

He further noted that his office remains in close communication with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas regarding the evolving situation. The Foreign Minister reiterated Cyprus’ longstanding travel advice, which advises against all travel to Venezuela, highlighting the ongoing risks in the region.

In light of the recent events, Kombos assured that Cyprus is prepared to offer consular assistance to its citizens who may find themselves in need, working alongside EU partners to ensure their safety.

Earlier, Kallas expressed the EU’s commitment to closely monitor the situation and indicated that she had discussed the matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She stated, “The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN charter must be respected. We call for restraint. The safety of EU citizens in the country is our top priority.”
