- The Financial Crime Investigation Office of the Limassol CID continues to examine the case, working to uncover any further details surrounding this international fraud scheme.
The arrest came after a coordinated effort between the police authorities in Romania and Italy, which led to the man’s apprehension. He had been wanted since March by Cypriot authorities, and a European Arrest Warrant was issued after detectives in Limassol uncovered evidence linking him to fraudulent activities.
The investigation began when the Director of a Limassol-based company reported that they had fallen victim to a scam. According to the complaint, the company was involved in a legitimate transaction with a foreign partner. However, they received an email that appeared to come from their collaborator, claiming that the bank account details for payment had changed.
Believing the email to be genuine, the Limassol company transferred $35,120 to a bank account in Romania. It was only after the payment was made that they discovered the account did not belong to their collaborator, and they had been defrauded. The foreign partner confirmed that there had been no changes to their banking details.
Following the fraudulent transaction, the Limassol CID launched an investigation, which revealed that the funds had been directed to an account linked to the 57-year-old man. His connection to the fraudulent scheme was established through evidence shared by Romanian authorities.
In September, the suspect was located in Italy, where he was arrested based on the European Arrest Warrant. After a judicial process, Italian authorities approved his extradition to Cyprus. On his return, police escorted him from Italy to Larnaca Airport, where he was formally arrested upon arrival.
