Cyprus’ shipping sector remains a cornerstone of the national economy, as highlighted by Andreas Neophytou, the president of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC). His remarks came during a reception on Sunday, setting the stage for the upcoming Maritime Cyprus 2025 international conference.
The event, which attracted over 800 attendees, underscored the chamber’s prestige both locally and internationally. Among the guests were key figures such as ministers, members of parliament, diplomats, and top executives from the global shipping industry.
In his address, Neophytou emphasised the shipping industry’s crucial role in supporting international trade and enhancing various economic activities. He stated that the sector ensures a steady flow of essential goods worldwide, playing a vital part in the national economy.
Neophytou noted that despite facing international challenges, the shipping sector in Cyprus continues to thrive. He expressed confidence in the country’s strong commercial fleet and its reputation for excellence in ship ownership, management, and maritime services.
“Cyprus has now established itself as a reliable international shipping hub,” he declared, citing the presence of over 200 shipowning, management, and maritime companies operating within its borders. These entities service more than 2,800 vessels and employ around 80,000 seafarers globally at any given time.
The president further pointed out that the success of the Maritime Cyprus conference is a testament to the prestige and international recognition Cyprus has achieved in the shipping industry. The conference, which has been supported by the Cyprus Shipping Chamber since its inception in 1989, continues to be a significant event for discussions and collaboration among global shipping leaders.
As the reception concluded, Neophytou remarked that it marks the start of a week filled with meaningful dialogue and idea exchange as part of the Maritime Cyprus conference. This annual gathering brings together influential figures and organisations from the global shipping sector, reinforcing Cyprus’ strategic importance on the world maritime map.
