gandhi teachings — gandhi teachings — Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings on peaceful resistance and non-violence remain a source of inspiration, House president Annita Demetriou remarked on Thursday during a ceremony honouring his bust near the House of Representatives building.
The event, organised by the High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Shri Manish, commemorated the 156th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, which is celebrated annually on 2 October. This date is also recognised by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Non-violence, paying homage to Gandhi’s enduring legacy.
Demetriou emphasised that Gandhi’s teachings serve as “a guiding beacon for unity and joining forces to defend common values and principles, address multiple contemporary challenges and build a more peaceful world.” Her words resonated deeply as attendees reflected on the importance of non-violent activism in today’s society.
The ceremony highlighted the historical ties and ever-growing cooperation between Cyprus and India. Demetriou noted that her forthcoming official visit to India next November, accompanied by a cross-party delegation, aims to further strengthen parliamentary exchanges and collaboration between the two nations. This visit underscores a commitment to fostering mutual interests and enhancing diplomatic relations.
As the bust of Gandhi stands proudly, it serves not only as a tribute to his teachings but also as a reminder of the ongoing journey towards peace and unity that continues to inspire many around the world.
