paphos water — Paphos water supply remains secure, according to Charalambos Pittokopitis, the president of the Paphos regional water authority. He expressed optimism on Monday, stating that the likelihood of water supply cuts for households or businesses is very low.
Paphos water: Current Water Supply Status
“We are currently receiving 2,000 cubic metres of water per day from the two small units in Potima,” Pittokopitis explained. This steady flow has been bolstered by the recent operation of the second small desalination unit in Potima, which has the capacity to produce 1,000 cubic metres daily.
Future Water Availability
Looking ahead, by the end of September, an additional 5,000 cubic metres of water is anticipated from a larger desalination unit in Potima. This development is critical for sustaining Paphos’s water supply, especially as the region faces challenging conditions.
Restoration Efforts
The desalination plant in Kouklia, which was devastated by a fire last December and could produce up to 15,000 cubic metres of water per day, is on track for a full restoration before September 25. This restoration is set to significantly enhance the region’s water supply capabilities.
Concerns About Reservoir Levels
Despite the positive news regarding supply and restoration, Pittokopitis highlighted ongoing concerns related to reservoir levels. The Asprogia-Kanavios dam currently holds approximately 2.5 million cubic metres of water, while the Asprokremmos dam has around 6.5 million cubic metres. These figures are alarmingly low, prompting calls for greater vigilance in water conservation.
Looking Ahead
“We must safeguard and address the possibility that we will not have rainfall this coming winter,” Pittokopitis cautioned. His remarks underline the importance of proactive measures in managing water resources as the region prepares for the potential challenges posed by future weather patterns.
