foot-and-mouth — The foot-and-mouth outbreak has led to the culling of 15,000 animals across the free areas, with an additional 15,000 pending slaughter as the situation escalates. Currently, 41 infected units have been confirmed, including new cases in Oroklini, Geri, and Dali.

The Veterinary Services are on high alert as the outbreak continues to spread. Vaccination efforts are ongoing, but coverage remains inconsistent. As of now, cattle vaccination has reached 76.43%, which translates to 295 out of 386 units across the island being vaccinated. However, goats and sheep have not fared as well, with only 41.19% of the 2,241 units vaccinated.

In response to the outbreak, new protection and surveillance zones have been established, particularly around the Idalion livestock area. This initiative encompasses 196 cattle units, 570 goat and sheep units, and 21 pig farms, aiming to contain the spread and protect the remaining livestock.

As the situation develops, the government is also looking at compensation measures for affected farmers and plans for livestock rebuilding to mitigate the long-term impact of this crisis.
