A 44-year-old special constable was suspended following a serious drink-driving incident in Nicosia. The officer was involved in a three-car collision that occurred around 8am on Wednesday at the roundabout outside Nicosia General Hospital.

According to police reports, the off-duty constable’s car collided with a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old woman, pushing her car into a third vehicle operated by a 38-year-old man. The force of the impact caused both the constable’s and the woman’s cars to catch fire, resulting in complete destruction of both vehicles. The third car sustained damage to its rear.

Fire service crews swiftly arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze. All three drivers were taken to Nicosia General Hospital by ambulance, where they received necessary first aid. Breathalyser tests conducted on all drivers revealed concerning results.

The special constable registered a breathalyser reading of 59 microgrammes, significantly above the legal limit of 22 microgrammes. Additionally, checks revealed that he was driving without a valid insurance certificate, which raises further legal implications.

Deputy Police Chief Panikos Stavrou ordered the suspension of the special constable, and both criminal and disciplinary investigations are now underway against him. This incident has sparked discussions on the serious implications of drink-driving and the responsibilities of law enforcement officers.
