Collaboration with the European Parliament
Metsola welcomed Cyprus’ presidency, recognising the challenges and expectations that come with it. She noted the pressing need for advancements in security, competitiveness, and simplification of legislative processes. Metsola expressed her assurance that with Cyprus at the helm, significant progress could be made on various issues, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine, migration policies, and the multiannual financial framework.
“With Cyprus in charge as a strong partner, I know that we will deliver and we will deliver together,” she remarked, acknowledging the support Cyprus has extended to various regions, including Ukraine and the Middle East.
Addressing the Cyprus Problem
Metsola reiterated the European Parliament’s commitment to the Cyprus issue, framing it as a shared European concern. She conveyed hope that the upcoming presidency could act as a catalyst for resolving long-standing disputes on the island. “We don’t talk about a Cyprus problem, but a shared European issue. The EP will always be on your side towards a single, sovereign European state, a bicommunal, bizonal federation,” she stated, aligning the resolution with EU values and UN resolutions.
In a poignant reminder, Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus’ own experiences with territorial integrity, stating, “Cyprus’ unwavering support to the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine will continue to constitute a priority during the Cypriot presidency.” He underscored the importance of defending the sovereignty of nations, drawing a parallel to Cyprus’ own situation.
Enhancing Relations in the Eastern Mediterranean
Christodoulides indicated that Cyprus would serve as a crucial bridge for cooperation between the EU and the United States, particularly concerning interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. He reiterated his intention to invite Turkish officials to an informal EU council meeting scheduled for April, aiming to foster dialogue and cooperation in the region.
He stated, “As the member state closest to the region and with excellent relations with all neighbouring countries, we will serve as a bridge of cooperation and tightening ties with our region.” Metsola echoed this sentiment, asserting that Cyprus’ leadership could significantly contribute to a more robust geopolitical stance for Europe.
A Focus on Affordable Housing
Affordable housing emerged as a critical topic during the discussions. Christodoulides acknowledged that while it is primarily a national responsibility, it remains a European challenge that requires cooperative solutions. The Cypriot government is awaiting a European Commission plan on affordable housing, anticipated within two weeks.
“It would be helpful if measures to promote affordable housing were coupled with grants to better tackle this challenge,” he noted. Metsola reaffirmed the significance of this issue, stating, “Affordable housing is high on everyone’s agenda and we are very glad to see that Cyprus will have it as one of your priorities.”
The Road Ahead for Cyprus’ Presidency
As Cyprus prepares to assume the EU presidency in just one month, Christodoulides has outlined two primary goals: enhancing the EU’s strategic autonomy and bringing the Union closer to its neighbouring regions. He believes that successful collaboration with the European Parliament is essential to achieving these objectives.
Metsola commended the Cypriot leadership, stating, “We can only say, as we have known you for a long time, that not only will we be your partner, but that we share a lot of the goals.” The collaboration is expected to pave the way for legislative progress on various open files, including those related to migration, climate legislation, and digital transformation.
Commitment to Effective Leadership
The government spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, shared optimism about Cyprus’ readiness for a successful presidency, underlining the commitment to close cooperation with the European Parliament. He highlighted the need for coordination on critical issues such as support for Ukraine, security, immigration, and climate policies, emphasising that the Cypriot presidency is fully prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
As the clock ticks down to Cyprus’ presidency, both Christodoulides and Metsola are poised for a collaborative and impactful term, aiming to address pressing issues that affect not just Cyprus, but the entire European Union.
