40 c — 40 c — Cyprus is set to experience sweltering temperatures of 40°C inland each day until Wednesday, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue daily yellow warnings for extreme heat. Meteorological officer Matthaios Papadakis confirmed that for the next four days, temperatures will soar to around 40°C, contingent on the prevailing conditions.

  • “Under these temperatures, we issue a yellow warning for high temperatures inland. Roughly the same weather conditions will remain on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” Papadakis explained.

The first yellow warning for high temperatures was issued on Saturday afternoon, signalling a need for caution among residents. Papadakis noted that while the temperatures are above seasonal averages, Cyprus is not currently experiencing a heatwave, which is defined by factors such as humidity and wind conditions.

“Under these temperatures, we issue a yellow warning for high temperatures inland. Roughly the same weather conditions will remain on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” Papadakis explained.

Humidity levels are expected to remain low during the day, but there may be light fog and low cloud formations in the coastal areas during the evening. This follows a summer where temperatures had largely stayed close to seasonal averages, but now they are on the rise due to seasonal low pressure affecting the region.

As for Sunday night, the skies will be mainly clear, although increased low cloud is anticipated along the coast, with light fog likely developing in southeastern areas during the early morning hours. Winds are forecasted to blow mainly from the northwest to northeast at force 3, with the sea remaining calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures are expected to cool down to around 23°C inland and along the coast, while areas in the higher mountains could see lows of 19°C.

Monday’s weather is expected to be predominantly clear, with winds shifting mainly from the southwest to northwest at force 3 to 4, gradually strengthening to force 5 in more exposed areas. The forecasted temperatures will again reach 40°C inland, with coastal areas experiencing temperatures around 31°C in the southwestern and western regions, 34°C along the remaining coastal areas, and 30°C in the higher mountains.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see similar clear conditions, with a slight increase in cloud cover expected by Thursday afternoon. Notably, temperatures are not projected to fluctuate significantly through Thursday, remaining above seasonal averages.

During the recent weekend, Nicosia recorded its highest temperature at 39°C. Other areas noted varied temperatures, with Larnaca Airport at 34°C, Limassol at 33°C, Paphos Airport at 30°C, Frenaros at 34°C, Prodromos at 28°C, and Polis Chrysochous at 34°C.
