water cuts — Larnaca is optimistic about avoiding water cuts this summer, according to the local government organisation (EOA) president, Angelos Hadjicharalambous. Speaking on Saturday, he expressed confidence in the measures implemented to ensure a stable water supply.
Hadjicharalambous highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging residents to cultivate a “water-conscious culture”. He emphasised that even with the current positive outlook, it remains essential for the community to conserve water and avoid overconsumption. “We want people to support the efforts we are making because even if we avoid interruptions this year, we may not be as fortunate next year,” he cautioned. “Problems could arise, and supply cuts may become necessary.”
As part of a broader initiative to enhance water management, Hadjicharalambous announced plans for the installation of smart water meters. By June, 27,500 units are expected to be operational. “The aim of smart meters is to improve the quality of service for consumers, who will be able to receive immediate notifications about unusually high water consumption in their homes and properties,” he stated. This technology is designed to help residents monitor their usage and potentially reduce their bills.
Additionally, the EOA is undertaking significant infrastructure upgrades. Hadjicharalambous mentioned ongoing projects, including mass replacements of water supplies in Kiti and Athienou. A tender, worth three million euros, has also been announced to replace the outdated water supply network in Oroklini, an area plagued by persistent issues.
In efforts to further promote water conservation, the water development department is preparing to distribute water-saving nozzles to consumers, although the timeline for distribution remains unclear. Hadjicharalambous explained that the devices would reduce water pressure reaching household taps, thereby curbing overconsumption and waste. He encouraged residents to install the nozzles once they become available, reinforcing the collective responsibility to protect this vital resource.
The proactive measures being taken by the Larnaca district highlight the local government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable water supply, while also fostering a culture of conservation among its residents.
