Concerns Over Humanitarian Issues
In their statement, the protest organisers highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis, noting that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed during what they refer to as a ceasefire. They draw attention to the continuing occupation and blockade of Gaza, which they claim is accompanied by bombardments, forced displacement, and starvation, all of which obstruct humanitarian aid. “This is not peace,” the statement asserts, underscoring the dire circumstances faced by Palestinians.
Opposition to the ‘Gaza Riviera’
The coalition also expressed strong objections to the plans dubbed the “Gaza Riviera.” They argue that these plans are predicated on the displacement of Palestinians rather than on principles of justice and reconstruction, warning that such measures could set a dangerous precedent for the broader region.
A Diverse Coalition
The protest is backed by a diverse array of groups, including the Alliance Against the Far Right, Fascism and Racism; the Cyprus Peace Council; Accept LGBTI Cyprus; and several political parties such as AKEL and Volt Cyprus, among others. This broad coalition reflects a shared commitment to advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people and upholding international law.
Demands for International Law
In their collective statement, the groups are calling for Cyprus to uphold international law and United Nations resolutions, alongside the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Their demands resonate with global calls for justice and equity amidst the ongoing conflict.
