In a statement shared via social media, Ozersay, who leads the People’s Party (HP), expressed concern over the lack of a concrete negotiation process. He cautioned that raising hopes without a solid foundation could ultimately result in disillusionment.

According to Ozersay, President Nikos Christodoulides is under mounting pressure to show progress on the Cyprus issue as the 2028 presidential election approaches. He suggested that the focus may be more on restarting negotiations than achieving a comprehensive settlement, which could lead to a scenario where parties are “negotiating for the sake of negotiating” without any tangible outcomes.
Electoral Gains Over Real Solutions
He expressed concern that political figures on both sides might exploit the initiation of new dialogues for electoral advantage, regardless of the likelihood of success. What Cyprus truly requires, he stressed, is a comprehensive and lasting solution rather than a series of endless negotiations.
Questioning International Influence
Ozersay also reflected on the international aspect of the Cyprus issue, questioning the United Nations’ capacity to facilitate a breakthrough in the current environment. He noted that the organisation’s influence in global affairs has diminished in recent years, suggesting that the prospects for a successful new initiative regarding Cyprus remain limited, particularly with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ term nearing its end.
