- cyprus resolutions — Greece has called for strict implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions on Cyprus during a recent meeting at UN headquarters in New York.
In his address on Wednesday, Greece’s deputy permanent representative, Ioannis Stamatekos, highlighted the issues surrounding the enforcement of these resolutions. He stated that the ongoing Cyprus problem exemplifies the challenges faced in the implementation of Security Council decisions.
Stamatekos pointed out that “the Cyprus issue is a typical example” where the reality does not align with the resolutions agreed upon by the Security Council. His remarks came during a session focused on the significant gaps in implementing UN resolutions, a topic of concern for many member states.
Emphasising the importance of adherence, Stamatekos asserted, “Respect and commitment to Security Council Resolutions 541 and 550 must be the compass for member states in addressing the issue.” These particular resolutions, adopted in 1983 and 1984, urge countries not to recognise the declaration of a separate entity in northern Cyprus and reaffirm the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
Stamatekos reiterated that the council had previously called on all states to respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Cyprus and not to support or recognise what he termed the “separatist, illegal entity.” This stance reflects Greece’s long-standing position regarding the Cyprus issue, which remains a point of contention in international relations.
By bringing this issue to the forefront at the UN, Greece aims to galvanise international support for stricter adherence to these resolutions, underscoring a commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem through established legal frameworks.
