Living in London for years after university took its toll on Loizou, prompting his move during the pandemic. “We spent a year in Cyprus and eventually landed in this city, which has seen a lot of growth in recent years,” he explains. The Mediterranean charm of Alicante resonated deeply with him, reminding him of home.

Inspiration Behind Swallow
The concept for Swallow, Loizou’s café, emerged from a desire to create a unique space inspired by his experiences in London’s coffee culture. “I wanted to start something of my own,” he recalls. His passion for coffee grew as he immersed himself in learning about it, ultimately leading him to identify a gap in Alicante’s specialty coffee market.
Finding the Perfect Location
After a year of searching for the right venue, Loizou discovered a historic space that required considerable renovation. “It was operating as a bar and club at the time, so it needed serious work,” he recounts. His vision was to create a modern Mediterranean environment filled with plants, promoting a sense of calm. This vision took months of hard work to realise.
The Name with Personal Significance
The name “Swallow” carries deep personal meaning for Loizou, stemming from a tattoo he has cherished for years. The swallow symbolises new beginnings and hope, reflecting his journey from burnout to a fulfilling career. “When I started looking for a way to do something completely different, Swallow was, without a second thought, the name I wanted for the business,” he shares.
Recognition in Spain’s Coffee Scene
Recently, Swallow was honoured as one of the best cafés in Spain, a recognition Loizou views as validation of his hard work and dedication. “We’re talking about a massive market — around 4,500 candidates, including some of the best-known cafés in Europe,” he notes. This accolade fuels his passion and determination to continue building something special in Alicante.
Community and Cypriot Influence
Loizou’s Cypriot heritage plays a significant role in the café’s atmosphere. He aims to blend traditional Cypriot coffee culture with the specialty coffee experience, offering customers a taste of his roots. “I also try to introduce customers to Cypriot coffee, explaining the process and the culture behind it,” he adds, highlighting his commitment to sharing his heritage.
Building a Legacy
Looking ahead, Loizou dreams of expanding Swallow beyond Alicante while maintaining its unique identity. He envisions developing a lifestyle brand that embodies the café’s philosophy and aesthetic. “I’d love for it to grow from a successful café into a recognisable brand with an international presence,” he expresses, aiming to connect with cities like London, Berlin, and perhaps even Cyprus.
