Cancer: Trials and Triumphs of Young Love

The couple’s relationship began when Yianoula was just 15 years old, during a summer visit to Cyprus. A chance meeting at a bar initiated a long-distance romance that would eventually lead them back to each other in Nicosia. Their love story took a serious turn on Valentine’s Day 2021 when Kyriacos proposed. At that time, he was studying medicine and working part-time as a dietician, seemingly healthy and vibrant.

A Sudden Health Crisis

However, as the months progressed, Kyriacos began experiencing severe fatigue and a persistent cough, symptoms initially dismissed as long Covid. Yianoula recalls noticing changes in him, such as frequent naps and growing tiredness. Concern escalated when a doctor’s visit revealed alarming news: Kyriacos had stage-four Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Facing the Challenge

The diagnosis was a life-altering moment for both. “I’ve been through hell and back, almost,” Kyriacos expressed, acknowledging the emotional toll that came with the illness. Treatment commenced promptly, involving twelve intensive chemotherapy sessions at the German Medical Institute in Limassol. Despite the challenges, the couple found strength in each other, with humour often serving as a coping mechanism for Kyriacos.

Building a New Life

By September 2021, Kyriacos entered remission, and life began to regain a semblance of normalcy. Yet, their hopes were shattered months later when doctors discovered suspicious nodules during a follow-up. The couple braced themselves for another battle as Kyriacos faced a relapse of the disease.

Unforeseen Parenthood

The relapse required aggressive treatment, including salvage chemotherapy and immunotherapy, drastically reducing the chance of future parenthood. Doctors advised the couple to freeze sperm, anticipating fertility issues following treatment. However, in a remarkable turn of events, Yianoula conceived naturally, defying medical expectations.

Spiritual Support and Miracles

Yianoula credits her mother-in-law’s unyielding faith and prayers to St. Ephraim, a saint known for healing, as a pivotal factor in their miracle. “I remember calling my mother-in-law, and telling her ‘I’m not going to have babies’,” Yianoula recounted, her voice trembling with emotion. “And she started crying…”

Sharing Their Story

Despite the ongoing stress of living with the fear of another relapse, the couple is determined to share their story, hoping it serves as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges. “We’re still hanging on for dear life,” Yianoula reveals, acknowledging the anxiety that accompanies every scan and check-up.

Living in the Moment

Their journey has taught them to cherish each moment and to maintain open communication. “You’re going to panic,” Kyriacos admits, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of their experiences. “But once you come to, what are you going to do? Are you going to just stay on the floor in a puddle of tears? Or are you going to get up and just continue?”

A Story of Resilience

Today, Kyriacos has completed his medical degree, an achievement he views as a personal victory against the backdrop of his illness. Yianoula has transitioned into teaching, discovering a new passion while managing the responsibilities of motherhood. Together, they embody resilience, illustrating how love and support can prevail even in the darkest times.

Hope Amidst Uncertainty

As they navigate life as new parents, Yianoula and Kyriacos remain vigilant yet hopeful. Their story is not merely one of survival but of the enduring power of love, faith, and the unexpected joys that can arise from hardship. “I keep saying he’s lived six lives in six years of a medicine degree!” Yianoula quips, reflecting on their extraordinary journey.
