With a lineage that stretches back nearly 3,000 years, Commandaria has long been a symbol of Cypriot winemaking excellence. Produced continuously since 800 BC, this dessert wine is crafted from a blend of two native grape varieties: the white Xynisteri, known for its refreshing acidity, and the rich, full-bodied red Mavro. The grapes undergo a meticulous sun-drying process post-harvest, concentrating their sugars and flavours, which mature further in oak barrels for at least two years, resulting in an exquisite profile of raisins, figs, caramel, and spice.
The name Commandaria is derived from La Grande Commanderie, a medieval Crusader stronghold on the island, while its title as the ‘wine of kings’ is attributed to Richard the Lionheart, who praised its exceptional quality. This historical significance has not gone unnoticed by Juancho Asenjo, Vinoble’s technical director, who has chosen to highlight Commandaria among a select group of what he describes as “wines for contemplation.” This distinction grants Commandaria a platform to shine amidst some of the world’s finest wines.
The choice of Jerez for this event is particularly fitting, as it is a region celebrated for its wine production and home to the Regulatory Council that oversees one of Spain’s most esteemed Designation of Origin. This collaboration with the Jerez de la Frontera City Council emphasises the fair’s importance as a global meeting point for winemakers, buyers, and importers.
Commandaria will feature prominently in 18 tasting sessions and seven master classes throughout the three-day fair, hosted at the historic Alcázar of Jerez, a landmark steeped in local heritage. The Alcázar, a fortress-palace from the 12th and 13th centuries, offers a stunning backdrop for this prestigious event, inviting visitors to explore the intertwined Islamic and Christian histories of the region.
One of the highlights of the fair will be the masterclass titled “Commandaria, The oldest named wine in the world,” led by Asenjo. This session promises to delve into the historical and cultural significance of Commandaria, particularly its ties to Venice and its role in the global wine narrative. This opportunity is not just about tasting; it’s about fostering connections between historical winemaking regions and introducing Commandaria to a broader audience of wine aficionados.
The anticipation surrounding Commandaria at Vinoble is palpable, marking a significant moment for Cypriot wine on an international stage. With its unique characteristics and storied past, Commandaria is poised to leave a lasting impression on attendees, reinforcing its status as a noble wine worthy of its title.
