During Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s first visit to Cyprus, he emphasised that Ukraine is a central priority for the island’s EU presidency. The Ukrainian president arrived at the Presidential Palace at 11:15 on Wednesday morning, greeted by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who had visited Kyiv just over a month ago.
Christodoulides welcomed Zelenskyy warmly, stating, “We are very happy to have you here on this very important day for Cyprus.” He expressed eagerness to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine and how Cyprus, as the EU Council Presidency, can support international efforts towards a peace agreement.
Zelenskyy responded by thanking the Cypriot leader for the invitation and congratulated him on taking up the EU Council Presidency, highlighting its importance for Ukraine. He expressed hope for “many steps forward” that would bring Ukraine closer to the EU, while also acknowledging Cyprus’s humanitarian support.
In a post on X following their meeting, Christodoulides described the discussions as “substantial and constructive.” He reiterated Cyprus’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, drawing parallels to the island’s own experiences with illegal invasion and occupation. “Cyprus fully understands what is at stake,” he noted.
Christodoulides assured Zelenskyy that Ukraine remains a priority during Cyprus’s EU presidency and that every effort will be made to enhance the EU’s support across various levels. “Cyprus stands firmly with Ukraine for a just and sustainable peace, fully based on the UN Charter and with absolute respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
Later in the day, Zelenskyy met with Archbishop Georgios, who extended an invitation for him to visit Kyiv. The visit signified a notable shift in Cyprus’s political stance, indicating a move away from previous pro-Russia policies towards a more supportive position regarding Ukraine.
In the early afternoon, a quadrilateral meeting took place at the Presidential Palace, featuring Christodoulides, Zelenskyy, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This gathering underscored the collaborative efforts ongoing within the EU to address the situation in Ukraine.
