wildfire — A wildfire has broken out near the Ergates industrial area in Nicosia, prompting a significant emergency response on Tuesday. The blaze is currently consuming dry grass, leading to the deployment of firefighters and aerial support to manage the situation.
Initially, four fully staffed fire engines from Nicosia were dispatched to combat the fire, as confirmed by Fire Brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis. The response was quickly bolstered by additional crews from the Forestry Department and the Game and Fauna Service, alongside organised volunteer groups.
In an effort to control the flames from above, two firefighting aircraft were immediately deployed, with two more on standby to assist in the aerial assault. The Nicosia EOA also contributed to the firefighting efforts by sending two excavators and a water tanker to help contain the blaze and prevent its spread.
As of Tuesday afternoon, firefighters on the ground, supported by aerial crews, were actively working to bring the fire under control. They have not yet revealed the cause of the fire or detailed the extent of the area affected. As the situation develops, more information is anticipated.
