green line — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen toured the Green Line in Nicosia on Thursday morning, accompanied by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. This visit highlights ongoing discussions around Cyprus’s unique geopolitical situation.
Christodoulides shared a personal account of their walk along the ceasefire line, expressing the profound silence that envelops the area, which has been shaped by decades of division. He remarked on the “poignant yet powerful silence of these streets”, a reflection of the historical context of occupation on European territory.
In a post on X, he acknowledged the resilience of the Cypriot people, stating that they have endured significant displacement and hardship but continue to persevere. “We witnessed the remarkable resilience of Cypriots who have endured displacement and unfathomable pain,” he noted, signifying the strength and determination that characterises the community.
During their dialogue, Christodoulides emphasised the importance of the European Union’s role in Cyprus, mentioning that it holds the promise of reunification. “As you often remark, our Union is a promise,” he stated, underlining the hope that the EU can facilitate healing and unity for all its citizens.
Von der Leyen reciprocated the sentiments of her counterpart, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome she received in Cyprus. In her post, she highlighted the island’s geographical and cultural significance, stating, “At the heart of our shared home, the Mediterranean, Cyprus is where continents and cultures meet.”
