- The United Kingdom and Cyprus reaffirmed their strong partnership during recent talks in Nicosia, highlighting a commitment to enhanced cooperation across various sectors.
British minister for European affairs Stephen Doughty underscored the importance of the discussions with Cyprus’ foreign minister, Constantinos Kombos. He described the relationship as a “strong friendship based on a long history” and noted that the dialogue covered crucial topics such as bilateral relations, trade, and shared security concerns.
Partnership: Critical Conversations on Security and Cooperation
Doughty indicated that the ongoing cooperation is vital, especially in light of recent developments in the wider region. He stated, “We maintain a strong dialogue across multiple sectors, and cooperation remains close given the situation in the wider region.”
During the meeting, both ministers exchanged views on a range of foreign policy issues, with Doughty emphasising the importance of security in their ongoing collaboration. He also acknowledged Cyprus’ role in the EU council presidency, describing it as significant for their partnership.
Building Bridges Post-Brexit
Doughty pointed out the “increased and very positive cooperation between the UK and the EU” that has developed since last year’s summit, indicating a focus on strengthening post-Brexit engagement between London and Brussels. “We are making progress in many areas,” he added, reflecting optimism about future relations.
Diplomatic Engagement as a Path to Stability
In a separate statement on X, Kombos reinforced the necessity of sustained diplomatic engagement amid a complex geopolitical landscape. He remarked, “Continuous and effective coordination is essential in an increasingly complex and changing geopolitical environment,” further stressing that “diplomacy and meaningful dialogue is the only sustainable path to stability.”
Exploring Broader Bilateral Relations
The discussions also covered broader aspects of the bilateral relationship, including trade, tourism, and longstanding cultural connections. Doughty highlighted the positive impact of British tourists on the island, expressing delight at the presence of many in Paphos, which bodes well for tourism ties.
Future Discussions on Sovereign Base Areas
The meeting follows remarks by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who stated that Cyprus intends to engage in an open and frank discussion with the British government regarding the future of the UK sovereign base areas on the island. This indicates a willingness from both sides to address complex issues head-on, signalling a proactive approach to the evolving partnership.
