arson attacks — Two suspects have been remanded in police custody in connection with a series of arson attacks in Paphos. The arrests, made on Thursday, involve a 19-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman who are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, arson, attempted arson, participation in a criminal organisation, and money laundering.

  • The investigation into these arson incidents continues as authorities seek to uncover further details surrounding the motives and connections of the suspects.

The Paphos district court has ordered both individuals to remain in custody for eight days as investigations continue. The younger suspect reportedly confessed to being paid €1,000 to set fire to various premises and vehicles, although he has yet to disclose the identity of the person who compensated him for these acts.

Incidents under scrutiny include two vehicle fires occurring on March 25 and April 6, as well as a fire at a cafeteria located on Agapinoros Avenue on April 4. Additionally, there was an attempted arson at the same cafeteria just this past Wednesday.

The police operation that led to the arrests began on Wednesday morning when officers noticed a rental car with fake license plates parked outside the previously targeted cafeteria. Observing suspicious activity, police saw two individuals exit the vehicle, one carrying a bottle and the other a bat. Upon noticing the police presence, they fled the area.

Following a pursuit, the rental car was eventually located parked outside a home in the Nicosia district. The 41-year-old woman residing there acknowledged renting the vehicle but denied any involvement in the arson incidents. Shortly after, police apprehended the 19-year-old, who reportedly resisted arrest and assaulted an officer.

The investigation into these arson incidents continues as authorities seek to uncover further details surrounding the motives and connections of the suspects.
