The Transmission System Operator (TSO) is currently reviewing 18 applications for energy storage projects as it collaborates with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. This initiative aims to advance the establishment of energy storage facilities across the region.

Applications Under Review

These 18 applications collectively represent a significant potential output of 416 megawatts (MW) and 1,485 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy. The TSO is working diligently to assess each proposal, focusing on the technical requirements necessary for successful integration into the existing energy infrastructure.

Challenges Faced by Applicants

Among the applications, six have encountered obstacles due to the substantial size of the proposed energy storage sites. In contrast to the six problematic applications, the remaining 12 submissions are in a more favourable position. The TSO has indicated that these applications are likely to receive permits for connection to the medium-voltage system, expanding the opportunities for energy storage development.

Preliminary Approvals Granted

In a separate but related development, the TSO has granted preliminary approval for connection to the medium-voltage system for eight additional applicants. Collectively, these projects account for a potential output of 231 MW and 570 MWh, further bolstering the energy storage capacity in Cyprus.
