A 60-year-old cyclist has died instantly following a head-on collision with a car in Limassol on Monday afternoon. The victim, Gunter Kohrgruber, was cycling with a group when the tragic accident occurred around 1:10pm on November 3rd.

Kohrgruber and his fellow cyclists were returning from a route near Plataniskia, having travelled from Paphos with their bicycles in a van. During their ride, the group was navigating the Pissouri to Plataniskia road when the incident took place.

According to Limassol traffic police chief Marios Charalambous, the driver of the saloon car, aged 32, was travelling in the opposite direction when he collided with Kohrgruber. The circumstances of the collision are under investigation, with police focusing on how the cyclist entered the opposite lane.

Reports indicate that Kohrgruber was cycling slightly behind three other members of his group. When they noticed his absence, they turned back to search for him, ultimately finding him deceased at the roadside.

Emergency services arrived promptly, but Kohrgruber was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle tested negative for alcohol and drugs, and it has been confirmed that the cyclist was wearing a protective helmet at the time of the collision.

In the aftermath of the incident, police cordoned off the area to conduct thorough examinations. Members of the Limassol traffic police and the Traffic Collision Reconstruction Branch from Police Headquarters are actively investigating the case. Authorities will assess statements from the remaining cyclists and review CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
