swimmers — Two swimmers were tragically pulled dead from the sea near Larnaca, highlighting serious safety concerns in the Oroklini marine area. The incident occurred on Thursday when the two women were swimming with friends near breakwaters.
Witnesses reported that the group had entered the water, but the women soon disappeared from view. Their sudden absence prompted an emergency response from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), which initiated a major search and rescue operation.
After a swift deployment, rescue teams located the unconscious women in the water. They were quickly brought ashore and transported by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
This tragic event raises alarming questions about beach safety, particularly regarding lifeguard presence. Notably, the section of the beach where the incident occurred was left unstaffed due to a third lifeguard tower not being operational ahead of its planned deployment on 1 July. In contrast, two other nearby towers along the Oroklini coast were fully staffed.
Local authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident. Officers from the Oroklini police station are on-site to gather information and ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
