phedonas phedonos — Suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos is set to appear before Paphos criminal court on Thursday, facing serious allegations including rape. This hearing marks a significant moment in the case, as formal charges are anticipated to be read out, with Phedonos expected to enter his plea.

Before the proceedings commence, it is reported that the prosecution will request a closed trial, aiming to protect the privacy of the alleged victim. Prosecutor Eirini Savva previously argued this case at a referral hearing, highlighting the legal provisions in place to safeguard victims and witnesses, particularly in violence against women cases.

The prosecution maintains that due to the sensitive nature of rape offences, enhanced protective measures for the alleged victim are necessary. Defence attorneys Christos Pourgourides and Epameinondas Korakides are poised to contest this request during Thursday’s session, having expressed their opposition in earlier hearings.

As part of the conditions for his appearance in court, Phedonos has signed a personal guarantee of €100,000. The indictment lists four charges against him: rape, indecent assault, administering substances with intent to commit a felony or misdemeanour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

This case has drawn significant attention, particularly as it involves a prominent public figure. The allegations arose following a complaint made by a businessman alongside the alleged victim, prompting a thorough investigation led by a special police team from police headquarters.
