A tragic incident occurred when a 70-year-old road worker was killed after a car struck an illuminated warning sign and then hit him while he was setting up cones at roadworks on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway.
The accident took place around 7.25pm on a section of the motorway that lacked road lighting, potentially complicating visibility for drivers. Limassol Traffic head, Marios Charalambous, reported that a 37-year-old man was driving a private vehicle when he collided with the illuminated warning arrow positioned in the right lane, where roadworks were in progress.
At that moment, the car struck the road worker, fatally injuring him. Initial investigations revealed that signage was present at the location, which could provide critical context regarding the circumstances of the crash. Charalambous stated that witness testimonies confirmed that the illuminated arrow was operational at the time of the accident.
As the police continue their investigation, they are examining various factors, including the absence of road lighting in the area. Charalambous noted this lack of lighting is being scrutinised as part of the ongoing inquiries. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a private hospital for examination, where he tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
Authorities are currently gathering statements from witnesses, including the victim’s colleagues and managers overseeing the roadworks.
