The road tax renewals deadline has been extended to 31 March 2026 following significant technical failures on the Road Transport Department’s website. Many drivers were unable to renew their road tax before the original deadline of 11 March, prompting immediate action from Cyprus’s parliament.

  • As the new deadline approaches, it is anticipated that many drivers will take advantage of the extension to ensure they meet their road tax obligations without incurring unnecessary fines.

This emergency legislation, which was passed unanimously on Thursday, was tabled by MP Alekos Tryfonides. The Transport Committee had reached an agreement with the Transport Ministry to seek a solution after it became clear that the website issues had affected numerous users.

The new law is retrospective from 11 March, meaning that drivers who renewed their road tax between midnight on 12 March and the publication of the law will have their late penalties refunded. This includes a €10 surcharge plus an additional 10% of the road tax owed for the current year.

Officials acknowledged the frustration faced by motorists due to the technical glitches. The swift legislative response has been welcomed as a necessary step to alleviate the burden on drivers who found themselves in a difficult position caused by factors beyond their control.
