  • A police officer was headbutted by an inmate of the Menoyia detention centre while being treated at the Larnaca general hospital, according to Larnaca police spokesman Spyros Chrysostomou.

The incident occurred when the 27-year-old inmate was taken to the hospital for medical examinations. Once the examinations were completed, the police officer attempted to handcuff the inmate, leading to the sudden assault.

Chrysostomou reported that the police officer was quickly assisted by his colleagues, who intervened to help restrain the inmate. Despite the altercation, the officers managed to handcuff the man without further incident.

The police officer was examined on-site by a doctor and found to have sustained a wound on his right eyebrow and contusions on his right hand. After receiving medical attention, he was able to return to duty.

The inmate was subsequently transported back to the Menoyia detention centre, where he remains under supervision. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, seeking to understand the circumstances that led to the assault.
