School supply: Wide Price Range for Essential Items
A recent survey conducted by the Cyprus Consumers Association, which examined prices at ten outlets both online and in-store, reveals that school bag prices can start at a mere €4.99 while soaring to €209.95, depending on factors like size and brand. Similarly, pencil cases show a broad price spectrum, with costs ranging from €0.71 to €44.95, and notebooks priced between €0.32 and €12.99.
Fluctuations Compared to Previous Year
When comparing this year to 2024, some items have seen a drop in price. Pencil cases and notebooks have decreased by 10 per cent and 18 per cent respectively. However, many entry-level supplies, including school bags, markers, and pens, have experienced notable price hikes of 25 per cent, 46 per cent, and 27 per cent, respectively. On the upper end, while pencil cases and folders have seen slight price reductions, premium notebooks have increased by 30 per cent.
Online vs. In-Store Pricing
The association found that some retailers offer lower prices online than in their physical stores, reinforcing the necessity of thorough price comparisons. This disparity underscores the importance of exploring multiple purchasing options before making a decision.
Involving Children in the Shopping Process
To further optimise their spending, parents are advised to involve their children in the preparation of shopping lists. This practice not only helps in distinguishing essential items from unnecessary purchases but also serves as a valuable lesson in financial literacy. The association encourages parents to prioritise quality and safety, particularly steering clear of products that resemble food or have food scents.
Teaching Financial Savvy
“The back-to-school period is an opportunity to teach our children how to navigate the market and avoid unnecessary consumption,” a spokesperson from the Cyprus Consumers Association stated. They also remind parents to check each retailer’s return policy prior to making purchases to ensure a smooth shopping experience.
