bus stops — The Paphos Regional Board of Tourism has condemned the unacceptable condition of bus shelters across the district, labelling them as a “third-world” state. This statement, released on Tuesday, came as they accused the Transport Ministry of undermining millions of euros invested in the area’s infrastructure and urban development.

In their statement, the tourism body highlighted that while various stakeholders are pouring substantial resources into enhancing the region’s urban environment and promoting it to visitors, the Transport Ministry’s negligence stands in stark contrast.

Bus stops: Infrastructure Failing Tourists

“At a time when all stakeholders are investing millions in upgrading the quality of the urban environment, tens of millions in infrastructure improvements and tens of thousands of euros in promotion to communicate the new upgraded image of the city and district, we are shooting ourselves in the foot due to the inadequacy and irresponsibility of the Transport Ministry,” they remarked.

The board pointed out that the current state of bus shelters, both for urban and intercity routes, is unacceptable. Many of these facilities are antiquated, lacking basic amenities such as roofing, seating, or even perimeter coverage. Furthermore, they are devoid of modern technology, missing out on digital information systems that could enhance the passenger experience.

Identifying the Problem

In their assessment, the board identified around 40 different types of bus stops and shelters in rural areas, most of which portray an image of neglect that is unwelcoming to tourists. “Daily we present to the millions of our visitors and the thousands passing through our district the unacceptable and third-world condition emitted by bus stop shelters,” they added.

New Shelters Not Up to Standard

Even the recently installed bus shelters have not escaped criticism, with the board claiming they have “made us a laughing stock across the planet.” This criticism stems from not only widely discussed construction defects but also their failure to provide adequate seating or protection from the weather.

A Call for Immediate Action

The tourism body has urged authorities to take immediate action to rectify the situation. They emphasised that the current state of bus shelters not only tarnishes the region’s image but also exposes the country to embarrassment. With the new tourist season set to begin in February 2026, they stress the need for swift improvements.
