paphos morgue — A refrigeration breakdown has halted operations at the Paphos General Hospital’s morgue, leaving the facility unable to manage new cases from May 22 until June 3, or until repairs are completed, according to the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO).
The SHSO has assured that bodies currently held in the morgue have been secured and are being stored under appropriate conditions. In light of the situation, families of the deceased will be promptly notified and are expected to arrange for the transfer of their loved ones to a licensed funeral home for proper storage and preparation.
For families unable to make immediate arrangements, the hospital is prepared to take necessary steps to ensure safe storage of the deceased. The SHSO has reiterated that all standard procedures for the management of the facility remain active, providing necessary services for families and other involved parties.
During this period, all post-mortem examinations will be conducted at Nicosia General Hospital’s morgue, which serves as the reference centre for such procedures. The SHSO has indicated that this transition will not hinder the process or impose an additional burden on families, as the decision aligns with best practices established by the Forensic Medicine Service.
This situation has drawn attention to ongoing concerns regarding the conditions at the Paphos morgue, particularly regarding unclaimed bodies and previous issues with refrigeration. The current breakdown highlights the importance of reliable facilities for managing the deceased in a dignified manner.
