Phedonas Phedonos, the furloughed mayor of Paphos, could be formally indicted as early as this week amid serious allegations. Reports indicate that he faces multiple charges, including rape and indecent assault, as the police investigations continue.

  • As the situation develops, Phedonos remains in a precarious position, suspended from his role as mayor while grappling with mounting public scrutiny and the potential for serious legal consequences.

Currently suspended from his duties, Phedonos’s legal team has yet to receive any formal notification regarding the impending charges. His attorney, Christos Pourgourides, expressed frustration over the media leaks concerning the indictment process, stating, “Neither I nor my client have been formally notified of anything.”

The attorney-general’s office is reportedly ready to file charges, a development that has heightened public interest. Sources suggest that the charge sheet is being prepared by the police, which will then be vetted by the attorney-general before formal proceedings begin.

Phedonos: Resurfacing of Historical Allegations

Media reports indicate that the allegations against Phedonos date back to an incident in 2014. At that time, a complaint was lodged, but the case did not progress. It was only earlier this year that the matter came back into the spotlight following accusations made by businessman Theodoros Aristodemou.

In a notable public appearance in 2016, Aristodemou labelled Phedonos a “rapist and a blackmailer”, urging him to take legal action to disprove the claims. The accusations were revisited this year, prompting the police to reopen the investigation.

Charges Under Review

Reports from Phileleftheros outline that Phedonos is facing at least three serious charges: rape, sexual abuse involving penetration, and drugging or sedating a person to commit a crime. Should these charges be proven in court, they carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment.

Phedonos has consistently denied the accusations, asserting that the case is politically motivated. In recent weeks, additional allegations surfaced, including claims by a social media influencer regarding an alleged assault on his wife in 2017. However, Phedonos’s spouse has publicly defended him, rejecting these claims outright.

The upcoming legal proceedings are likely to attract significant attention, given the gravity of the allegations and the political implications involved. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris noted that if necessary, arrangements could be made to take statements from individuals living abroad to aid the investigation.

As the situation develops, Phedonos remains in a precarious position, suspended from his role as mayor while grappling with mounting public scrutiny and the potential for serious legal consequences.
