Oroklini beach has been successfully cleaned after engine oil contamination was detected in Larnaca on Thursday evening. Authorities sprang into action, deploying resources to mitigate the pollution swiftly.
Late on Thursday night, officials from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research were alerted to an incident involving bilge water containing a mixture of engine oil and diesel fuel near Larnaca port. Marina Argyrou, director of the department, confirmed that a team was dispatched at daybreak to address the situation.
Swift Action to Contain the Spill
Upon arrival at Larnaca port, maritime service officials utilised floating barriers and absorbent materials to contain and clean the spill effectively. “At first light, maritime service officials from the Department of Fisheries arrived at Larnaca port and, using floating barriers and absorbents, managed to clean the pollution,” Argyrou stated.
Impact on Oroklini Beach
The contamination, primarily consisting of engine oil, did reach Oroklini beach. The local authority, the Oroklini Municipal District of Larnaca Municipality, was informed to initiate cleanup operations. Neofytos Fakontis, the deputy mayor of Oroklini, indicated that small amounts of oil had washed onto the beach.
“The Department of Fisheries was notified as the competent authority and took charge of the matter,” Fakontis explained. He described the incident as non-concerning, noting that some beachgoers continued swimming while others awaited the completion of the cleanup efforts. “Much of the oil has evaporated and it is expected that by tomorrow the remaining small quantity that washed onto the beach will evaporate,” he added.
Looking Ahead
The Cyprus Ports Authority, which oversees the management of Larnaca port, will continue to conduct relevant pollution investigations to prevent future incidents. The proactive measures taken by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the coastal environment.
