Nineteen foreigners were arrested in Larnaca on Wednesday during a joint operation targeting illegal employment. This enforcement action was conducted by the police alongside the labour ministry’s inspection unit, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat unlawful work practices in Cyprus.
The operation commenced at 9.30am at a construction site, where inspectors discovered that all 19 individuals were working without the necessary permits. Among them, one person was found to be in the country illegally, further complicating the situation.
Authorities are now turning their focus to the employers who facilitated this illegal employment. Investigations are underway to determine how these individuals were hired and whether the employers violated any labour laws.
In addition to the arrests, labour ministry officials identified significant infractions related to undeclared work. As a result, fines amounting to €63,000 were imposed, serving as a stern warning to those who disregard employment regulations.
This operation underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing labour laws and ensuring that all workers are protected and employed legally. The labour ministry aims to deter illegal employment practices and promote fair working conditions across the island.
