  • nicosia larnaca — Traffic disruption has arisen on the Nicosia–Larnaca highway following lane closures in both directions near the Rizoelia roundabout.

At approximately 4.00pm on Thursday, the two right lanes on each side of the motorway were closed due to damage to an underground telecommunications pipeline. This unexpected situation required vehicles to merge into the left lane, causing significant congestion.

Authorities quickly noted that the closures were necessary to ensure the safety of all road users while repairs were underway. As traffic backed up, particularly on the route from Nicosia towards Larnaca, delays stretched from the Athienou area to the Rizoelia roundabout.

In light of the situation, police have advised drivers heading towards Larnaca and Larnaca airport to seek alternative routes. They suggested taking the old Nicosia–Larnaca road via the exits to Lympia and Athienou, which could alleviate some of the congestion.

Another alternative route offered was the Kofinou–Larnaca path through the Nicosia–Limassol motorway. Authorities are encouraging motorists to remain vigilant and exercise caution while navigating through the affected area.

In their statement, officials urged drivers to “drive at a safe, low speed and maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front” as they pass through this disrupted section of the highway. Despite these efforts, there is currently no estimated timeframe for when the closed lanes will reopen, leading to continued traffic management via diversions and limited access.
