On Thursday, the parliament adopted the Health Ministry’s position, reinforcing the importance of having specialist doctors available during diagnostic procedures. This decision comes after intense discussions among political parties regarding amendments to the proposed legislation.
Prior to the vote, several amendments that sought to modify the bill were withdrawn. Instead, a new joint amendment proposed by the ruling party, DISY, along with opposition parties AKEL, ELAM, and DIPA, was approved. This amendment not only enforces the presence of qualified radiologists during examinations but also prohibits the examination of animals at centres designated for human patients. The legislation stipulates that animal diagnostics must take place at dedicated specialist centres.
The passage of this law reflects a commitment to improving healthcare standards in Cyprus. By ensuring that trained professionals are on-site during medical imaging, the government aims to minimise risks associated with diagnostic errors and enhance patient care.
The parliamentary session leading to the vote was marked by vigorous inter-party negotiations. Although there was a motion raised for a further postponement of the bill, it was ultimately rejected, allowing the proposal to move forward without delay.
