Speaking during the handover ceremony on Monday, he emphasised that achieving the government’s energy transition goals will require a well-structured approach.

  • As Damianos embarks on his new responsibilities, the focus remains on implementing sustainable solutions that will enhance Cyprus's energy sector, ensuring a greener future for all its citizens.

Damianos stated, “The role of the ministry is crucial to the prosperity of Cyprus, and our course will be judged by our ability to implement realistic and measurable goals, which will bring tangible results for all citizens.” His commitment indicates a shift towards more environmentally friendly policies aimed at improving the energy landscape of the island.

In his inaugural address, Damianos expressed gratitude to outgoing minister George Papanastasiou, recognising the valuable contributions made during Papanastasiou’s three-year term. He highlighted that fostering closer cooperation with the ministry’s staff will be essential for delivering measurable outcomes that benefit the public.

Papanastasiou, who has stepped down but remains available to support the new administration, reflected on the accomplishments of his tenure. He pointed out significant reforms achieved, including advancements in energy storage solutions and the establishment of natural gas agreements within Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing efforts to address critical issues such as the Aphrodite–Isai dispute and developments concerning the Vasiliko LNG terminal.

In a parting message, Papanastasiou affirmed his commitment to transparency, stating he “will always speak plainly” and intends to continue engaging with energy policy discussions, even outside of government.
