At around 11:30 am yesterday, the Special Motorcycle Unit (EOMO) of the Traffic Department initiated a routine check at the Paralimni-Deryneia roundabout. The motorcyclist was observed riding without a protective helmet, prompting officers to signal him to stop.

Instead of complying, the rider accelerated and veered off in another direction. During the ensuing chase, circumstances are still being clarified, but he struck an officer, injuring the officer’s hand. Following the collision, the motorcycle crashed into a parked car and came to a halt.

In the aftermath, police conducted a search of the motorcyclist and found a grinder containing traces of what is believed to be cannabis in a compartment under the motorcycle’s driver seat. Additionally, a breath test conducted on the individual revealed a reading of 21 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 9 μg%. A preliminary drug test also returned a positive result.

Authorities arrested the motorcyclist for multiple offences, including negligent and reckless acts, drug possession, and serious traffic violations. He was swiftly taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where he received medical attention before being discharged. The injured officer was also treated and released.

Following the completion of police investigations, the motorcyclist was released but will be summoned to court in the future to face the charges. Additionally, his driving licence has been suspended as part of the ongoing proceedings.

Both the Paralimni Police Station and YKAN, the Famagusta district branch of the Drugs Squad, continue to investigate the incident.
