According to Yiannis Antoniou, the island’s deputy government spokesman, the meeting focused on an exchange of views regarding the recent developments in the area. Speaking to SKAI television on Friday, Antoniou confirmed that President Christodoulides maintained communication with both the British Bases on the island and the British Prime Minister.
Antoniou noted that while the visit appeared planned, it coincided with the heightened tensions resulting from the conflict in Iran. “The meeting may have been scheduled and coincided with this situation, but I believe there is a connection around it,” he stated.
In light of these discussions, the deputy spokesman aimed to reassure the Cypriot public by clarifying the island’s current military posture. He emphasised that Cyprus is not on a war footing, even though the situation is being monitored closely. “Right now, the impression must not be given that Cyprus is experiencing wartime conditions. We are in a state of heightened alert,” Antoniou explained. The island’s air defences are reportedly operating at maximum readiness to ensure security.
